Come and Celebrate our 25th Birthday

VIP Invitation to Awesome Walls Liverpool’s 25th Birthday Party

Many, many, moons ago, I was standing in our first climbing centre, The Climbing House, Bootle, when someone gave me a copy of the Liverpool Echo. They pointed to an article about a derelict burnt-out church that was due for demolition if a buyer couldn’t be found! I instantly dismissed any thought of being that buyer as it was in such a bad state of repair and I was virtually penniless with the ongoing costs of The Climbing House. However, I did keep the copy and the next day my curiosity got the better of me and decided that a quick look around the church wouldn’t do any harm…

The following day I phoned the number from the paper and asked to have a look around. The church was in such a bad state that I had to sign a disclaimer with the council to say that I wouldn’t sue them if anything happened to me! We entered the church with our hard hats on and a flow of pigeons took to the air and disappeared through a gaping hole where part of the roof should have been (there had been a massive fire a year earlier).

Despite the missing third of the roof, the burnt-out floor, the general vandalism and the masses and masses of pigeon poo, I looked around and uttered the words, “This is Awesome…!”. My council accomplice was speechless at my enthusiasm, while he couldn’t wait to exit the building for health reasons, I had to go forth and explore every nook and cranny I could gain access to.

Three years earlier, I’d been a climbing bum on the dole, travelling around and climbing anywhere and everywhere to get my climbing fix. Now, I was standing in this awesome wreck of a building considering my options. A good friend who was a surveyor warned me away from the building as did every person I know. Why risk everything I had accomplished over the last three years on this massive money pit (my Mum’s words, not mine!)? At first, I agreed that it was not viable and I should be lucky to accept what I’d achieved so far. That was fine until a few days later, I woke up, and something inside me said I had to 100% take this church on. I’m not a religious person but if I was, I would say it was a calling…

Twenty-five years later with more climbing walls in Stockport, Stoke-on-Trent, Sheffield, Dublin and Cork, it’s safe to say that it’s a good thing that I listened to that ‘calling’!

Awesome Walls Liverpool has seen many changes over the years, I’m sure that more are to follow in the future and I look forward to you joining us on this awesome journey.

As a celebration, we wish to invite all our members and friends to a day of climbing and partying on Saturday 20th April 2024. Please look out for our next email which will have full details of all the day’s entertainment and fun to be had.

I look forward to seeing you there.

All the best,
